By Euripides
Translated by Robinson Jeffers
Medea is a Greek tragedy written by playwright Euripides about the sorceress Medea as she takes revenge on her estranged husband Jason. After dedicating her life to his goals, Medea is spurned by Jason in favour of a young princess. In response to his oath breaking actions, Medea swears to ruin him, with the force of the gods behind her will. The play Medea is the tragic conclusion to the well known epic of Jason and his quest for the Golden Fleece, and gives an interesting insight into the way women were portrayed in the Ancient Greek world.
SUTCo's Medea aims to create an intense, emotionally driven story explored through unique tech choices whilst incorporating some classic elements of theatre. It looks to incorporate styles of theatre inspired by practitioners such as Brecht and Artaud, working with ideas like epic theatre and Artaud’s in-depth use of lighting and sound. The show sought to push the boundaries of the drama studio space with a creative and immersive set design and lighting choices designed to reflect the characters on stage rather than their setting.
