Swap the Press
by Francesca Vercoe and Charles Wright
An insight into the inner workings and politics of a television newsroom in 1960s Britain where breaking headlines include the Profumo Affair, the invention of the Contraceptive Pill and the Space Race... The only difference? Men are fighting for their independence and women are calling the shots.
In this quasi-historical gender swap concept, 'Swap The Press' will be taking real news stories and commercials from the 60s and exposing their outrageously sexist undertones by proving how ridiculous it would be to blame a male prostitute for seducing a female politician or, god forbid, expect your husband to wait on you hand and foot!
Over the course of the play, this gender swap facade will begins to crack as men start to gain more power until eventually, the reality of this power dynamic becomes evident, leaving the audience with a chilling reflection of what life was really like for women in the 60s.
